I took a visit to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul,
the central children’s and maternal mother hospital.
It was rather quiet in the hospital, the light shining through windows only.
My first impression was that it would be overcrowded and dirty like the public hospitals in India but this was rather clean for a poverty stricken country.
During the winter, it would be much colder and have little to none electricity.
Despite the electricity and some needed supplies,
this was the best hope for many children, who are brought in with their mothers.
Most children in Afghanistan never make it past their fifth birthday
The main problem being malnutrition and lack of clean drinking water.
The mentality here in Afghanistan is that children are a gift of god
Yet two or three children from each family will die and even if they live
They will probably not receive any education to help them learn.
The corridors are filled with flowing blue burqas clutching their children in their arms
Doctors busily going from room to room, making quick judgements
Trying to get through the day.
