ABODE

As the daylight shortens
the damp, cool nights
of Autumn, begin to
seep into his tired bones
Heralding the onset
of a freezing Winter
sleepless nights
trying to get warm
in this shop doorway
he calls home.
and they say
we live in a just
society.

    Beautiful and sad words Jane…

  • Vicki I used to work in welfare and many people were really doing it tough, this poem was of an old man who didn’t trust me enough to organise accommodation for him and on the way home after work I was walking to the railway station and it was Winter, dark and he came out of a doorway and grasped my hand , he was frozen and I got the fright of my life ! so we spoke in the dark and I eventually go him to come back to the office in the morning and we arranged help for him . But for the one person we can help , far too many go without’

we have a homeless man here in our town. I offered him some hand warmers during this past winter and he would not take them. said he was alright. Everyone knows him but he won’t take any help from people. I don’t know how he survives

  • I can’t imagine being in that situation Mark, I used to work in welfare and many people were really doing it tough, this poem was of an old man who didn’t trust me enough to organise accommodation for him and on the way home after work I was walking to the railway station and it was Winter, dark and he came out of a doorway and grasped my hand , he was frozen and I got the fright of my life ! so we spoke in the dark and I eventually go him to come back to the office in the morning and we arranged help for him . I guess a lot of it is they don’t won’t hand outs , I remember one Halloween (when I was a child in Scotland) we went out dressed in costumes and my costume was a tramp my dad’s old jacket sized for me and to keep me warm he put newspaper on the inside on the inside of the coat. I
maybe newspaper or something like that keeps this warm.
    thanks Mark
