Sea of Pain - Self Portrait by Jaeda DeWalt
Originally this was intended to be a g-rated version of the image, Emotional Rain . As i began to work on it, i realized what it wanted to be, needed to be, was an extension of the image, “Emotional Rain”, where it could serve as a companion creation.
Family issues have stirred the ghosts of pain that haunt my soul. When i looked at this image, i saw it in a new light, reborn. Faces of pain, tirelessly treading in dark murky waters to keep from sinking into a sea of sadness. I don’t see pain as something to run away from or avoid. Pain is something i seek to move through, as i reach for the lesson being offered, that i may learn from it, strengthen, grow and evolve.
I draped my face with the gray-scale version of a Seattle sunrise i photographed Christmas weekend, through my bedroom window, because when i move through my pain, it clears the path for a new dawn, a new day. It is in this moment that i can feel the sun rising on the horizon of my soul.
The color version of the sunrise (pictured below) was beautiful but i felt it important to keep this image black and white.
