Image File Sale by Jason Connolly

Posted on November 27, 2010

Hi folks
I have just received a message from a film, video and multimedia company who want to use one of my images for a period of 10 years, it is for a touch screen interactive which is a cityscape of Liverpool, England.
They want to know how much I will charge them and how they go about getting a high res file of it..
How much is the going rate?
I have a couple of figures from friends but would like to hear more..
Cheers..Jason

Are you going to show us which one it is, just out of interest? Am really pleased for you Jason, so glad to hear that someone is doing well with their work…S:)x

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Sandra. You are right, I certainly don’t want to undersell myself. Well what I have charged in the past is a bit of a giveaway, Steve gave me a figure which sounds good but thought I would see what others felt about it too..cheers Sandra..

No idea, but a girl I know on here got AUD$600 for the non-exclusive use of one of her images for 1 month in an online and print advertising campaign.
    Congratulations Jason.

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Garth..I think the more original the shot the pricier it becomes, as to value, I suppose it depends on how much the buyer thinks it’s worth hey…$600..Now that’s a good price..

  • Colin J Williams Photography

    Colin J Willia...

A hard one, Don`t undersell yourself, but at the same time don`t overprice ! Good luck with making the decision, and Congrats !

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Colin, that is exactly my problem…Sometimes wish they would offer me a price and see If I was happy with that, that would be good..

I think the reason they don’t offer a price is that they are hoping you pick a price that is 5% of what they are prepared to pay.
Bear in mind the $600 was for 28 days use.
Why not put the boot on the other foot and ask them to propose what they are prepared to pay for non exclusive use and also for exclusive use?

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Garth…Blimey mate…Now I am having to think about that. You’re right, how much are they prepared to pay?..that sound like a good plan…

Fabulous news mate, many congrats. As for pricing – I wouldn’t have a clue. How about asking them what they would offer and then come back to them once you have had a think. If they offer too low tell them that you want more as it a long term Project lasting 10 years. Hope it all goes really well for you mate, so well deserved.

  • Jason Connolly:

Think I will do that, mate and cheers…

I would say…the “going rate” is irrelevant here, 1 you are an amateur and 2, as an amateur the kudos is worth more than the money. say that, everything has a price and it is only worth what they are prepared to pay, based on a similar 1 year rights sale I’ve recently has, which was also charity linked, I would say start at £1000.00. Most stock websites would be between £50 & £100 for online rights, not printing rights, that’s different. let’s face it, £500 would be pretty incredible wouldn’t it…think of the exposure !!.
    that’s my 2 cents anyway !!…Fantastic news by the way…well done mate…:)

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Jonathan..Thanks for you for more than your 2 cents worth :-)) that is fantastic advice..cheers mate.. Fortunately it’s not my bread and butter income…

Well done sir, not sure if this is up to date but it might help and Amazon is full of help. You have to decide on a pay structure, a large fee up front and a usage renewal each year with them having first rights to that image, a one off fee and then work out the legal exclusivity rights, also work in 10 years of tax rates, inflation, the costs of you dealing with this issue each year. Try looking for advice on some of the pro photographer association sites.

  • Jason Connolly:

Thanks for that Richard..That was helpful mate, cheers..

Well done Jason, you have got to be thinking four figures minimum a £1000 is less than £2 per week over ten years in my reckoning not much when you think of it, not even a pint of ale. Its also only 2000 clicks a year at 5p a click. Best of luck with this one Jase.

  • Jason Connolly:

Thanks Alex mate..we’ll see what they offer me mate, thanks mate..

  • Tom Gomez

    Tom Gomez

It’s difficult to say without more information on the exact nature of use, but I just had a quick look on Alamy, selecting the closest I could find as a licensing option. The longest period was 3 years and for just use in the UK, the cost was £255, rising to £490 for worldwide or a slightly different selection, based on use on a corporate website came out at over £1700. My website, based on Imagequote, ranged from £1500 to £2000 for 5 years. It basically depends on whether or not it is going to be for advertising purposes or not, as that will push the price up to the four figure values.

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Kernuak…I suppose originality, the right place, right time and quality of shot will also determine price..It would be nice to get 4 figure sums if they are willing to pay that for the image…

  • PirminNohr

    PirminNohr

Congratulations! That’s a big honor! Charge as much as possible, they just can say “no”.

  • Jason Connolly:

Thanks Pirmin…I would like that but also don’t want to put them off altogether..I suppose finding a good deal for both parties hey..

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers Nigel…We’ll see what they offer me first..and then nogotiate..

  • John Brotheridge

    John Brotheridge

Congrats Jase’ The price? Haven’t a clue, but think of the free publicity and if you are reasonable, whats to stop them and others coming back for more? You need to speak to a rival company to get an idea of price or ask them their price and treble it. Any fee will be taxable, so don’t be asking here and put the image in your kid’s name. 10 years is a long time too, what were things worth 10 years ago? What will they be in 2020?
Good Luck, don’t blow it, Ha.

  • Jason Connolly:

Cheers John..Yes you are right..the possibilities are endless..After all this isn’t my bread and butter income and am only very part time self employed in this game..Not my day job…
Like you also say..I don’t wanna blow it, do I?

Thanks Pal..I’ll let you know how it goes on..

That’s ok Jason, good luck. You just have to be careful not to get exploited. Commercial use gets less than advertising generally it seems. So far I’ve only had editorial use licenses, which get less again. Letting them name a price first is a good ploy, but also find out the exact requirements, so that you can get a better guide.

Better late than never Jason – have had a big power cut. Just my pennies worth – You’ve got to get the accent right and it goes something like this : A thousand pounds sounds about right already my son ! The ‘already my son ’ tells them you are of the right ethnic persuasion not to stand any nonsense and the’ about right’ gives them room to manoeuvre and you to counter manoeuvre ! Sound OK ?
