Views From The Ascent Of Ben Nevis.

Views From The Ascent Of Ben Nevis.

Another shot of one of the views of my ascent up to Ben Nevis, the highest Mountain in Scotland and the British Isles. 1344 metres.

This was the first Mountain out of 3 in 3 days, the other 2 were Scafell pike in England and Snowdon in Wales.
As you can see the light wasn’t the best and it only got worst the higher I went up.
Shot with a Nikon D300 and 18-70mm lens.

  • Jason Connolly replied

Just a little tweaking in photoshop to get it how it was on the day, and this how it was, pretty miserable LOL.

and here we are without the digger, right?? Glorious, glorious countryside, jason … just makes me catch my breath!!!!! By the way, do you ever use graduated neutral density filters??? I’m having such a time with landscapes lately, I thought I’d look into them … and your skies are never blown out … always perfection!!!

  • Jason Connolly replied

Thanks Lois for the great comments on the shot, this was shot just a little before the digger shot, I liked the big boulders for the foreground on this one..The wind up here really does make you catch your breath LO, Wish now I’d have taken my camera out of my bag to try and show the extreme conditions on top.
No I haven’t used ND grad filters before, I eman I have only just bought a ND 4filter for my waterfall shots, I have actually been looking into buying some ND grads to try out as blown out skies can be a problem, what I tend do is by using layers, bring down the highlights in one shot and blend them through with the eraser tool showing a better exposed shot but not on many though..
    Cheers for the great comments.

Jason, thanks so much for your note … yes, I do the same with layers … and of course hdr sometimes helps. But I’ve got a particular spot on Blue Knob … it’s THE most perfect location with a wonderful old wooden fence in the foreground, I can get branches above to frame it … and below this amazing scene of the valley and lower mountains all around. Sometimes, in early morning, even clouds below … but … always, always, it’s blown out. I’ve tried everything … camera setting wise and photoshop, but I’m never satisfied. I think the grad nd is the answer.

  • Jason Connolly replied

suppose when we are taking shots and manipulating them to mimic how your eyes see that scene at the time, you have got to think sometimes you have to squint and the real scene may even look overexposed to the human eye if you know what I mean, I suppose it might look that bit more realistic if that little bit of overexposed was left in the shot, maybe I am just talking twaddle, but it’s just a thought that crossed my mind at this moment in time.
I will get around to trying ND grads at some point, cheers Lois..

    Hi Jason,
well done on your hikes.. I only did Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag on Sunday.. my leg muscles were aching then, glad to have a rest the following day.. Really surprised about the weather on Sunday at Scafell pike, I mean we weren’t that far away and for most of the day the skies were cloudless. I think any large clouds disappeared about 10:30 ish..

Love the low lying clouds in this shot.. I guess you didn’t.. lol. Well done :-)

  • Jason Connolly replied

Hi there Alan, well Scafell, it was in cloud too, but we did it early and on the way down the clouds dispersed and the sky was this awesome blue, I said a few choice words to the sky on the Sunday.
Just to think we may have past at some point mate LOL..
Glad you like the shot mate.
