This little guy had buzzed into a window and had knocked himself silly. After a bit of “mouth to mouth” he was fine and he just rested in my hand for awhile. My grandson had one fly into his bedroom. By the time we managed to get him outside again, he was sitting on his hand as though he had been trained to do so. We have learned it is not so hard to coincide with natures animals. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you, it was the only shot that came out good as it is hard to hold a bird and do a photograph at the same time….I was thankful to get it…....glad you like it.

I am so jealous of your experience with a hummingbird. we don’t have them here, but … I have had similar experiences with birds here in Adelaide who have flown into our windows. Often they look dead when they hit the ground, but I’ve found if I just hold them gently for a while (once it was 2 hours, but worth every second), they recover slowly, sit quietly as though they had always sat on a human’s hand, and then suddenly fly away as though nothing had happened. It is a moving and wonderful experience, very special.

  • Jeri Dettenheim

Jeri Dettenheim in reply to Denzil’s comment, 4 months ago

The experience is great isn’t it…...whether knocked out or hand fed…..there is nothing more gratifying to me than to be accepted, without fear, into the world that is still wild.

completely true. i’ve had a few of them get tangled up in spider webs in the garage and i had to take them out and take all the web off. it’s great, really nice picture

How lucky are you? They are tough enough to photograph normally, let alone shooting them while you hold them. That’s fantastic. You certainly were rewarded for your feeding efforts. Well done!

Put yourself outside with them, put some nectar in a small container and use yourself as a “holder” for their food and you may find they will perch and feed. It has happened!!!!!!!
