Danae: The Girl in a Box

So the story/myth/legend is the following. Danae was the first born daughter of a King Acrisius in Agos, Greece. Because she was a female, the king fretted to the oracle about a desire for having a male heir. The oracle told the king that if his daughter was to marry or even birth a male child, her partner or offspring are destined to destroy him. So in the King’s self-preservation, he shoved his daughter in a dungeon where Danae grew. Secluded from men.
It is hard to say if it was love or lust which motivated the god, but never the less, Zeus took it upon himself to sneak in through a keyhole and shower Danae with his golden seed. Because the gods are crazy and the oracle is almost always right, Danae bore a son named Perseus. According to folklore some say Perseus’s father was a human and bribed Danae’s guards with gold: others say the father was the greek god Zeus and he took advantage of the fair maiden in a shower of sunlight.
At some point Acrisius, decided to visit his daughter, and upon entering her living quarters discovered to his horror the birth of a male offspring, the king’s grandson who would later accidentally kill King Acrisius. He had to dispose of the mother and son, and quickly dumped them into a box and had them tossed to sea.

The story twists and turns, but eventually the oracle’s prediction comes to pass.

Metamorphosis the Legend of Danae

Danae

Julie Everhart had inspired me to paint this picture. I was trying to decide which one of two paintings of Klimt I would attempt to honor and then Julie had uploaded a face of a woman she painted digitally. Julies painting gave me the ah- ha moment I needed, and here is Danae.

The following is an example of the original work by Klimt:

Homage to Klimt

I hope you enjoy my painting. I do have more to say. perhaps later.

Thanks so much, In the early stages of it my 19 year old son said she looked “raw,” which I thought was wonderful. As I was working on it I remembered Kolliwitz and some to the expressionists. thanks so much.

you’re an exceptionally talented painter and artist! A brilliant interpretation of the original work. :)

  • izzybeth replied

Dang Jennifer, thanks so much. I still have a real problem with her father… dumping her in a in a secluded place and then going to see her and being shocked that she had bore a male offspring. AND THEN DAMNIT. HE DUMPED THEM BOTH IN A BOX AND BURIED THEM TO SEA!!! iS THAT THE LOVE OF A DADDY? And I still can not get over thinking why would the father go see her after all that time. I know I sound like a crazy woman, but gee whiz.

Argh! Yep, the background story is a tragic, twisted tale for sure, the archaic superstitions and beliefs that permeated twisted, demented Minds back then were outragius to put it mildly, but unfortunately, such extremes in murderous thinking and behaviour still exist today, where insane people use their beliefs and practices as excuses for murder…

i REALLY LOVE THIS .. and the story is somthing I feel.. wonderul!

  • izzybeth replied

Thank you so very much. It is amazing is it not? While writing and painting the background of the Danae story , I remembered the Alice Sebold story: The Lovely Bones… the antagonist raped murdered an innocent, and then dumped her in his parent’s safety deposit box and tossed the box into the neighborhood swamp. Lost for ever… I did not just now give away the whole story though, give it a look-see, you might be inspired by the novel. Love you Lina…

There’s something about the pose and the color that reminds me of Gustav Klimt’s paintings. Love the compressed space. A powerful vision.

  • izzybeth replied

Thank you very much. Gustav Klimt’s work makes my jaw drop… the way he uses colors and the intensity of the pigmentation. I am glad you like her…

P.S. And I see the picture you referenced. . . this time. When I commented the first time, the Klimt photo didn’t show up. :>D Oh well. . . I love your version! LOL!

  • izzybeth replied

Yes, it was interesting deciding on a color palette. I have a book on Klimt, but the colors appear to be monochromatic. And then I looked on the internet and found Danae represented in different colorways. It was sorta fun deciding on which image available to choose. At last, I found Christie’s website. It had Danae’s skin appear to be almost glowing in shades of lavender and peach. I even saw yellow and a bit of green in it.I guess it would have been much more fun if I had had the privilege of using the original!!! Thanks again for you comments. I always appreciate hearing from you.
