Seams

Seams

In honor of my Scandinavian heritage.

Grandmother Anna was a proud Norwegian.transplant, and I am the daughter of a daughter of a seamstress. Grandmother Anna Lorraine Mortensen at the age of 19 came to America in the year 1900 from Norway via Ireland. She was an indentured servant for a number of unspoken years. She was a seamstress.

Yes, I know how to sew a straight line. And have spent many fastidious hours for the sake of the ideal seam.

Although I can not remember which magazine I found this image from, this color pencil drawing was inspired from a photo I found in a design periodical.

Seams belongs to the following groups:

All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical, Colour Me Vibrant Red!, Fine Arts, Knick Knacks, Live, Love, Dream: , Pencil Drawing (2 per 24 hrs), Scenic Scandinavia and Solo Exhibition Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints, Framed Prints and Posters

I am also the daughter of a seamstress, it did not get passed down to me however, I cant even sew a button without it falling off, My mum used to make all our clothes and knit all our cardies and gloves, me..I just go buy it. Fabulous thought provoking work :)

  • izzybeth replied

Wow! And laugh out loud. I do not make clothes any more. Occasionally I will do window curtains, but only for my home. Thank you and your work is lovely.

Those are little pin cushions, yes? How cute. My mother taught me to sew when I was about 12, her mom sews,.. now I do upholstery and window treatments. Not as much sewing as stapling :)) Love the artwork, very good!

  • izzybeth replied

    Hi Rachel,
Window treatments. yes. I am so glad you like this…

Such a great still life / impression. I admire your ability to paint the jar. I’m having a heck of a time with glass and water. Right now I just keep painting glass and water over and over trying to get it right. Kudos, Izzybeth.

  • izzybeth replied

Vincent, thank you and I am glad you like it. Except, it was not painted, I used Prisma color pencil. I have found I have a lot more control using pencil than a brush. I prefer the brush because of the instant color, though. So what’s a girl to do?

I have always loved this piece Beth! The way the glass looks so very real, all the pincushions stuck through with pins… Beautiful!

    Hi Sam,
Thank you for accepting this image in the Scenic Scandinavia group. I thought it might be pushing the boundaries because the drawing was a drawing and not a photo… And because it was not taken in Scandinavia. I saw that the group submissions were accepted on the contingent the photo was taken in Scandinavia. However, this drawing was in memory of my Grandmother Anna. Again thank you.

  • izzybeth replied

Thank you so very much. I really enjoy the control of colored pencil. Paint is such a challenge to lay down the colors, but pencil work… this is a different story.

I love a heavy color saturation, and the instant stroke of paint is satisfying.

Now drawing this seemed to take FOREVER…COLORCOLORCOLORBLENDBLENDBLEND…..
