Happy Times, Here We Come

“It is really working!” said the flimsy one-page manual. “Dropping the 5 kilos instantly!” They were pretty much the only words in English in the whole damn thing.

She turned the machine over in her hands. It was a mystery – just a weird steel box, inexplicable with foreign script and symbols. It had one button, orange. Her eyes glanced back at the manual.

“Sick of putting the weight back on? No more of the worries about that! Happy times!”

Happy times. What she wouldn’t do for some of those. She pinched the rolls of fat around her waist. No more, dammit.

“Never put on the weight any more again! One push of the button!”

She sighed, grabbed the gleaming device with both hands. She closed her eyes, and one finger pushed the cheerful orange button. Happy times, here we come.

ZINGK

And off came her head.

(Eyes closed. And smiling.)

Artist's Description

For the Flash Fiction Challenge #21:

“THE THEME
On TV, in newspapers and magazines, occasionally (or often) you come across the most ludicrous gadgets, weight loss equipment and diets. Whatever it is they’re selling, you are the copywriter for the ad. This should be in conversational mode but still a story with a conclusion (punchline).”
