I Wish I Was a Grown-Up! (children's story)

‘It’s time for you to go to school,’ said Mummy.
‘Are you going to school, too?’ asked Iggy.
‘I don’t have to go to school,’ said Mummy, ‘because I’m a grown-up.’

‘It’s time to do your homework,’ said Daddy.
‘Are you going to do your homework, too?’ asked Iggy.
‘I don’t have homework,’ said Daddy, ‘because I’m a grown-up.’

‘It’s time for you to go to bed,’ said Mummy.
‘Are you going to bed, too?’ asked Iggy.
‘I can go to bed when I want,’ said Mummy, ‘because I’m a grown-up.’

‘I wish I was a grown-up!’ cried Iggy.
‘But Iggy,’ said Grandpa. ‘You’re a growing-up, and that’s just as good!’

‘But If I were a grown-up, instead of going to school, I’d go to the park and I’d jump in the mud!’
‘But Iggy,’ said Grandpa. ‘Grown-ups don’t play in the mud!’
‘Why not?’ asked Iggy.
‘Because they’re grown-ups!’

‘Well, if I were a grown-up, instead of doing my sums for homework, I’d stand on my head as long as I can!’
‘But Iggy,’ said Grandpa. ‘Grown-ups don’t stand on their head!’
‘Why not?’ asked Iggy.
‘Because they’re grown-ups!’

‘But if I were a grown-up, instead of going to bed, I’d stay up all night and howl like a monster!’
‘But Iggy,’ said Grandpa. ‘Grown-ups don’t play Monster!’
‘Why not?’ asked Iggy.
‘Because they’re grown-ups!’

‘But why? Why don’t grown-ups do all those fun things?’ asked Iggy.
‘I don’t know,’ said Grandpa. ‘Maybe they’re all just silly!’
‘Maybe I’ll be a grown-up who’s not silly,’ said Iggy.

‘Maybe,’ said Grandpa. ‘One day we’ll find out. But tomorrow, let’s go to the park, and you can jump in the mud, and stand on your head, and howl like a monster all you want.’
‘Okay!’ said Iggy, and then Iggy went to bed.

The next day, Iggy went to the park with Grandma and Grandpa. Iggy played in the mud and became a big, mean mud-monster.

Grandma saw how much fun Iggy was having and so she said to Grandpa, ‘Sometimes I wish I was a kid again.’
‘Me too,’ said Grandpa, with a big smile on his face.
