Hi, my name is Hannah, I’m an artist and photographer and I live in Tuscany, Italy. I studied art in my home country of England and spent many years there working in a variety of creative media including glass design and make-up artistry.
A few years ago, I decided to take a few years out to travel around the Mediterranean. My eyes were opened by the beauty and the quality of light I discovered. I wanted to take a closer look at every flower, leaf and natural form in the hope that maybe, someday I would come closer to what actually created that beauty. I found photography was the best medium to capture the abundance of unspoilt nature I discovered, as it allowed me to record my journey through the changing seasons in a spontaneous and instinctive manner.
The profusion of colour I have found here in Italy has both amazed and delighted me, as colour has always featured strongly in my work. As a young art student, I was awakened to its sheer power and spirituality by the work of Van Gogh, Mark Rothko, Anish Kapoor and Georgia O’Keefe. To this day, these artists continue to inspire me to use colour in a way that evokes feelings and inspires thought to the people that see my art.
Italmacro is a concept born of a passion for the nature in Italy, one of the most beautiful and romantic lands in the world. I am dedicated to showcasing that beauty using macro digital photography to create fine art images for interior spaces. The macro lens can enter into and reveal the intimate beauty of flowers, plants and leaves that usually remain hidden from the naked eye. I want to share with you the sense of awe I feel every time I witness up-close some of nature‘s most miraculous colours, patterns and forms. These personal adventures with my lens have resulted in the collection of images you see on this site. All these images are shot in the garden of Palazzo Cervini, a beautiful, peaceful, renaissance palace set in the heart of Southern Tuscany near Montalcino. This palace was commissioned by Pope Marcello II and was built by Antonio da Sangallo ,the famous Vatican architect that built the Pope’s living quarters. The present Count and Countess (descendants of The Pope Marcello II) are still in residence today. A Romanesque chapel and an extensive hermitage (Eremo) were also constructed to accommodate for a fascinating group of humble monks, known as the “Camaldolesi”, who first inhabited the caves that now form the foundations of the castle in 1,004 ad (500 years previously). This hermitage exists today, a place for peaceful contemplation and where one can truly be at one with nature and it’s beauty.
I feel very strongly that all prints remain as close as possible to reproducing the natural colour and light of the beautiful Italian countryside where they were taken. Therefore, photoshop or any other digital software is not used to manipulate any of the images in this series.
Italmacro is an ongoing project, one which will continue to grow as I explore around Italy and live through it’s seasons.
I truly hope my art brings as much joy and peace to your home as it does to mine.
