The American Goldfinch is a small ( 11-13 cm ( 4.3-5.1 in long) North American bird of the finch family. It is a migratory finch, ranging from mid-Alberta to North Carolina during the breeding season, and just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter.
Male Goldfinches are vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter months. He uses his bright summer coloration in the summer to attract a mate. The female is a dull yellow-brown which only brightens a little during the summer months. Both sexes have a pink beak that turns bright orang with the spring molt.
