“ABOUT ANNA HUMMINGBIRDS”
A male Anna Hummingbird defending his territory from a sunny branch on an otherwise cold winter day.
At only 10-11 cm ( 3.9-4.3 in) long, it amazes me at how such a small bird survives our damp cold winters here on Vancouver Island, B.C.. They feed on insects and the nectar of flowers, but with much fewer insects out and about and no flowers during the winter months with the combined cold and damp weather, life must be somewhat harsh for these little birds. In the winter of 2010, I noticed a lone female Anna Hummingbird in my yard. I had taken my Hummingbird feeder down months ago after the Rufous had left south for the winter. I felt sorry for this lone Anna Hummingbird and decided to put out my smaller feeder for her. I enjoyed watching her all winter long. This summer, she found a mate ( shown in pic) and so this winter I enjoy watching a few more Anna’s in my yard.

Anna Hummingbirds are found in shrubby or open wooded areas, as well as mountain meadows along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to Arizona.
