A friend and I were walking along the ocean shoreline at Piper’s Lagoon when we spotted a Great Blue Heron fly onto a rock. No sooner did we have our cameras set up on our tripods when the Heron spotted something in the shallow waters. Its head disappeared beneath the surface for a second and up it came with an eel like fish. lol It flew over to a rock where it consumed its catch before getting back to fishing some more!

Taken on June 18/11 at 5:15pm at Piper’s Lagoon, on south east Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. Camera, Canon 7D Tripod, Manfrotto, including 498RC2 ballhead. Lens, Canon EF100-400 L IS USM lens. Taken at 1/1250’s at f/8 at 390 mm, iso 800, man white bal 6500 kelvin. Cropped some off the top and right side to bring the Heron in even closer. Upsampled to original size. Added a slight Topaz filter. Sharpened via lab mode, lightness channel, unsharpmask ( amount 35, radius 3, threshold 3).
This is just a stunning shot, Sandy! Really, I just have to say this is outstanding, spectacular, and breathtaking all rolled up into one shot. I just love the action you caught here in such a beautiful environment. Your lighting is perfect as always. This is more than just a fave for me, its exceptional!!!

Piper’s Lagoon is a pretty area to take pics of shoreline birds, wild flowers and Gary Oak trees ect. We just happened to end up at the right spot at the right time! lol : )
hey Sandy nice and wow as usual …the clarity and techs are what I would except …haven’t been around much…busy up here but starting vacation tomorrow ..heading to the coast…be the first time down there in 8 years….take care my Island buddette….
