A young male Rufous Hummingbird fans his tail in flight and the sunlight casts glitter to his colorful throat patch!

Rufous Hummingbirds are incredible fliers. Like all hummingbirds, Rufous Hummingbirds can hover or fly in any direction swiftly and with ease, but the Rufous Hummer excels in its flying abilities even above other hummingbirds. They are feisty birds, constantly battling each other for possession of a feeder or flower patch. Their flying skills allow them to easily drive off Anna’s Hummingbirds more than twice their size.

The shiny feathers on a male hummingbird’s throat is called their gorget. The gorget on a Rufous hummingbird is a beautiful reddish bronze color. If jewels this beautiful existed, they would probably be worth more than diamonds and rubies. These feathers are iridescent and the birds are able to aim a beam of light from them. That’s why the gorget looks black until they notice you and then you see the color.

Such a beautiful capture of this hummer! Excellent clarity and very sharp detail. We have the Ruby-throated variety here out east. They have the scarlet red but to tell you the truth I’m kind of partial to the reddish bronze color of the Rufous Hummingbird. I guess you always want what you can’t have (LOL). :)

  • Thank you so much Robert! I feel that is one of the benefits to viewing others photos, because we get to see subject’s that we wouldn’t otherwise see in our own area. I have seen photos of birds and other critters that I never knew even existed before, so it can even be a cool learning experience too! : )
