Under a warm July morning sunshine, a mature Grizzly Bear sow can be seen grazing on grasses and wild flowers and pawing at the ground in search of insects. As I took some pics of her in the near distance, she slowly made her way closer towards me. With her ears set forward, she made eye contact a few times, and of the bears we had seen in Yellowstone, it was clear to me that this particular bear was not at all uncomfortable or nervous of the humans who lined the side of the road to view and take pics of her. I stood on the shoulder side of my truck and as she approached me closer, at about 106.6 meters ( 50 ft), I decided it best to take my camera off the tripod and slowly get back into my truck. I had the keys in the ignition incase I might have to get the window up quickly. She ended up approaching my truck and turning parallel to it so closely that I could only view half her body in my viewfinder. It was a thrill to watch this large sow go about her morning routine in search of food.
Grizzly bears, like most wild creatures search for foods that will quickly and easily satisfy their appetite. Their diet consists of vegetable matter including flowers, grasses, sedges, herbs, tubers, berries, nuts of all kinds, animal carcass, fish, small marine animals, ants and other insects, honey, elk, moose, calves, and other small animals such as ground squirrels and marmots. Because of their large size, grizzly bears regularly have a high caloric intake of food in order to maintain their size; they will eat up to 36 to 41 kilograms (80 to 90 pounds) of food per day. They are able to gain 11 to 23 kilograms (3 to 6 pounds) per day.

Wow, outstanding shot Sandy, she is a beauty. You were smart to be very careful!!
The ranger who was across the road from me at the time had previously taught us to use our vehicles as a shield. When she approached closer, I left my tripod outside of my truck and got after she was far enough away. Many kind thanks dear Marvin! : )

Beautiful !! I can’t imagine getting that close to a grizzly let alone any bear for that matter. Stunning Image !!!
I felt the same when I first started looking for bears to shoot. I began to feel a little more comfortable when I began to read their body language. Of course I am very cautious not to push the limits of space between me and the bear to cause any distress. Many kind thanks Karen! : )

Just incredible. Was it feasting on clover? What a glorious shot! Hard one to stop looking at!
Yes, she was feasting on clover and she walked around with the single clover hanging in her mouth for quite some time. She eventually swallowed it. lol I wonder if she was hoping to trade it for some buffalo meat, as in the pic she was looking over towards where a buffalo was bedded down. lol Many kind thanks for your kind compliment Lee-Anne! : )

Great capture!!! I’m glad you are aware of the dangers around bears, especially if they have cubs ~ Lynn
Yes, I’m very cautious and would never want to intrude on a bear’s space. I wondered if she might have some young ones, but there was no sight of any, so perhaps not. Many kind thanks dear Lynn! : )

Superb capture, Sandy. Thanks for painting a picture of your experience with this animal at Yellowstone!
Awe,….thank you so much Aaronc! It’s my hope I can paint many more pics of future experiences with other bears in the future. I so dream of a return trip to Yellowstone in the coming years. It is truly a photographer’s paradise! : )

Forgive me, I hadn’t noticed the write up given the brilliance of the image. I love how you detailed your experience so factually stating just what you saw. These are words that educate and they are so important. What a super experience you had with her. The way you described how close she came to your vehicle put me right there with you. I am always amazed that bears spend so much of their time eating plants. Great read!
