A male Rufous Humming Bird’s throat patch glows iridescently red in the spring sunshine.
Rufous Humming Birds are described as “feisty,” little birds. Among all the North American hummingbirds the Rufous have the right weight to size ratio, allowing them to outfly all other species. They often get their way at feeders at the expense of slower, less-maneuverable hummers. The Rufous has the longest migration route of all North American Humming Birds.
Females are larger than males and their average weight is 0.00341 kilograms ( 3.41 grams). A male’s average weight is, 0.00322 kilograms (3.2 grams).
