MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD

A female Mountain Bluebird hunts from a tall driftwood perch. Once she detects an insect, she leaves her perch, hovers and descends below to catch the insect!
Besides insects, Mountain Bluebirds also eat small fruits.
The Mountain Bluebird is a song bird of the Thrush family.
The Mountain Bluebird’s breeding range is from east-central Alaska, southern Yukon, and western Manitoba south in the mountains to southern California, central and southeastern Nevada, northern and east-central Arizona, and southern New Mexico, and east to northeastern North Dakota, western South Dakota and central Oklahoma. Their winter range is from southern British Columbia and western Montana south to Baja California, Mexico, and southern Texas, and east to eastern Kansas, western Oklahoma and central Texas. The Mountain Bluebird nests in most forest types of the Rocky Mountain region, usually from 7,000 to 11,000 feet in open forests or near forest edges. During their migration and during winter months, it also frequents grasslands, open brushy country and agricultural lands.

What a wonderful shot of a special bird. As always, Sandy, I love your narratives and descriptions supporting the image. Your trip to Yellowstone yielded some very special photogaphic experiences, including this one. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Sandy Stewart replied
Awe,...thank you so kindly David! I never imagined seeing any Mountain Bluebirds in Yellowstone and so it was a special surprise just to see them there. To capture them gave me some photos to keep and remember by, but I long to visit again one day. : )

Sandy…How wonderful. I love the action and the flight of the bird…the motion of the wings in particular looks particularly stunning. So much more interest in this image than in my sitting still one. Did you use a tripod for this one? I don’t think that I could have done this. As always, you impress me!
Liz
Sandy Stewart replied
Awe,....thank you so much Liz! I love your Mountain Bluebird! It is a little more of a challenge to capture the birds, especially the smaller ones in flight, but it can be done on occasion! lol Yes, I did use my tripod. It was a matter of focusing on the bird while it was perched and waiting with finger lightly on the shutter button, with a fast shutter speed and hoping the bird would not fly beyond the focal plain of ( f/10). Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t! lol
robynart

Sandy Stewart replied

sorry, sibley’s is just another birdy reference book, like petersen’s or audubon. :)
Sandy Stewart replied
Thanks,...now I know! lol No, I didn’t carry one with me. I leave it at home and any birds I am not familiar with, I look up when back at home. My backpack is heavy enough without carrying anything extra in it! lol : )

Tell us, what is CAPA, Sandy?
Sandy Stewart replied
CAPA stands for Canadian Association For Photographic Art. One can join as an individual member and or through a photo club. They have separate digital, slide and print competitions throughout the year in different categories. Our club is a member of CAPA and so anyone who belongs to the club can submit photos to the competition categories, which are Nature and Open this time around. You can enter up two photos for each category. Only one can be selected of the four to compete. The top scoring six photos from different photographers are chosen and sent off to another host club somewhere in Canada to be judged. Each time the photos are judged, there are three judges and each judge judges each photo out of a possible ten pts, so it is possible for a photo to get a total score of 30. Of course it is rare for a photo to score that high, but it has happened! lol Each club that has entered is scored against the other clubs across Canada for placings! Often a CD is sent to each of the clubs, containing the top 100 highest scoring photos for viewing! : )
