TERRITORIAL KING

TERRITORIAL KING

FEATURED in Unlimited Quality on June 19/09! Many thanks to the hard working kind hosts of this group!

Also, I can’t thank the group hosts of The Birds for also so kindly featuring this photo on June 19/09!

I call this mature male Rufous Humming Bird the King over his territory, as he keeps busy warding off all other birds who dare to intrude on his territory to feed from the feeder in which he has claimed ownership over. He doesn’t believe in sharing! lol
Rufous Hummingbirds like all Humming Birds can fly amazingly fast, often darting with pinpoint maneuverability. They are pugnacious and tirelessly chase away other hummingbirds, even in placess they’re only visiting on migration. Like other hummers, they eat insects as well as nectar, taking them from spider webs or catching them in midair.

Sandy this is gorgeous, nice fast shutter speed needed for that. Brilliant work.

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Paula! Yes, a fast shutter speed for sure and it was a challenge to keep the shutter speed up there, because the sun kept ducking behind the clouds. I was continually adjusting my aperture and exposure settings that day. lol : )

Superb, Sandy! We don’t get those beautiful orange ones down here. Excellent PS work, I’ve never tried that. Looks fantastic! Great work!!

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Daniel! I rather not have to change backgrounds on my photos if at all possible, but unfortunately there are times when shooting conditions render changing the background easier, than attempting to work with an otherwise distracting, contrasty ect background. Of course on the other hand, I won’t hesitate to change a background on a piece where I am rendering an artsy feel to a particular shot! With this shot, I could have mentioned nothing and no one would have known otherwise, but I have a conscience that would have nagged me, if you know what I mean? lol Many kind thanks again Daniel. : )

  • mydogmax

    mydogmax

did you say “hold it” whilst you took that? Amazing

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Lol,......no, but I keep hoping they will just “hold it”! lol When it came to this particular shot, the bird had backed away from the feeder and was hovering when I captured it. This is why its wing didn’t blur with motion. Typically, with the shutter speed that I shot this with, the wings would end up showing motion blur. I just happened to get lucky when the bird hovered momentarily. I managed to capture three consecutive very nice frames while the bird held the hover. Many kind thanks again! : )

  • camerahappy

    camerahappy

Wow, that is a beautiful hummingbird! I have never seen one with this colouring, he is fabulous. I know they are not easy to capture, but you got an awesome shot!

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so kindly camerahappy! Over the last four days I have an explosion of Humming Birds visiting my feeder! Most are babies. They are consuming what they would have consumed in four days, in only one day! They are consuming 1 cup of sugar in 2 1/4 cups of water a day now! Many kind thanks again! : )

  • camerahappy

    camerahappy

Wow! They are little piggys…the babies must be increadibly tiny

  • Sandy Stewart replied

They are tiny when in the nest, but by the time they find their way to the feeders, they are close to the same size as their parents. Their markings are not as nice as the adults and their heads can appear large on their bodies. lol Apparently Humming birds consume about a thimble full a day, which means I have many feeding at my feeder! lol

Man oh MAN! What a shot!
My parents have a male Roufus in their back yard as well.. His nickname is “The Sheriff” for similar reasons as you described. I personally witnessed him getting the bird to land on his finger while feeding. It lasted about 1.2 seconds but it did land! :)

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Kody! They certainly are brave little birds and it is so cool when one does land on you for sure! I can hold the feeder and they will come and feed. They also don’t mind me standing within a foot of them while they are feeding. They get used to you and I am sure they realize who is feeding them! Many thanks again Kody! : )

  • A.M. Ruttle

    A.M. Ruttle

HI Sandy, Out of curiosity, I covered two perches on a hummingbird feeder with two of my fingers, and a rufous (or course!) came over and sat down on one of my fingers to feed… they are cheeky!

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Awe,.....what an experience that must have been hey? I was filling the feeder yesterday and had one trying to feed as I was filling the bottle. I told her that she had to wait until it was filled and upright. lol
