KEEPING WATCH

FEATURED in the group, Wildlife, Landscape and Nature Photography. Many kind thanks to the hosts, Jay Ryser and Gary Lengyel.

A female Rufous Humming Bird keeps watch from a favorite perch close to a feeder.
Rufous Humming Birds are the feistiest hummingbird in North America. The brilliant orange male and the green-and-orange female Rufous Hummingbird are relentless attackers at flowers and feeders, going after even the large hummingbirds of the Southwest, which can be double their weight. The Rufous Hummingbirds are wide-ranging, and breed farther north than any other hummingbird. They can be seen in the spring in California, summer in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and fall in the Rocky Mountains as they make their annual circuit of the West.

“PHOTO INFORMATION”

Take on Jun 15/09 at 4:46pm
Taken in raw and aperture priority, adobe RGB col space
Taken at 1/640 at f/9, 400mm custom wht bal 5850 kelvin, iso 800.
Camera; Canon 40D
Lens; Canon EF 100-400 f /4-5.6 IS USM L lens.
Tripod; Manfrotto, including joystick head
In PhotoshopCS2, added a layer of hardlight and set opacity to 23%. This darkened the background and popped the brighter areas of the bird better, adding a nice contrast between the bird and the background.
A slight sharpening on the eye only. No cropping!

Note; I personally feel that part of the challenge of good photography is capturing the composition without the need to crop and or only having to do a slight crop!

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Hawker! It’s certainly a challenge to capture these busy little birds! I find it almost more of a challenge to capture them perched than I do capturing them in flight. : )

Great capture Sandy. Good background color, too!

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Gary! I find it can be challenging capturing these little birds without too busy a background, but this one sat in just the right spot to lend a nice soft backdrop. : )

Beautiful Sandy. I like the effect of the hard light layer, and the lighting in general. The background is wonderful, and the shadow across the bird’s shoulder adds a nice touch to an already great photo. As always, I appreciate your write-ups.

Awe,....thank you so kindly David! I always look forward to your in depth compliments. : )

    Beautiful capture, Sandy.
I agree with you 100% regarding cropping – the less the better.

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so much Stan! Heavily cropped shots can show fine enough online, but they are pretty useless for anything other than a small print. Photography is a form of art and so capturing it compositionally balanced right out of the camera is part of the challenge in producing a good shot! : )

  • LudaNayvelt

    LudaNayvelt

It is very interesting to read on all different way to process the image, I was falling a sleep yesterday , was to late . But I will follow some of your instructions to see the difference between my fantasy approach and one by instructions I never actually do anything the same ( refer to the scale capacity of layers), and never can even tell what I done, I play with image until it’s look good, at least on my home laptop, but after sometimes I look from my work PS, and It’s look so different …) You have beautiful portfolio, I will need to spend time and look it more , but not until I am home ( just took a short break at work)

  • Sandy Stewart replied

When it comes to editing creatively, I too edit differently for each and every photo, but I try to remember to write down on paper as I go along, so I can share how I edited each photo with the viewers. It’s too bad your laptop shows photos differently than when on your home computer. Perhaps there is a way to set your laptop up to the same color profile ect as your home computer? Don’t work too hard! : )

  • LudaNayvelt

    LudaNayvelt

there maybe a way , but I work with computers, 3 at my desk currently, and they get changed often. My home laptop show everything the best, and yours would be may be different anywhere.

  • Sandy Stewart replied

I had to spend one long day getting my computer set up and profiled to show my photos the way they appear when printed on my own printer, as well as to how they print out on retail printers. Of course, that is if the retailer doesn’t adjust to their own liking. lol I’ve viewed my photos on a few friends and family computers and they appear the same as I see on my own computer, so that made me happy! lol

Sandy, this is a fabulous capture, love the colors of the little Hummingbird, and how fortunate you were that it sat still long enough for you to capture it. Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ :)

  • Sandy Stewart replied

Thank you so kindly Rick & Deb! Sorry for such a long delay in saying thank you! I have been away on holidays and since getting home, I have so much to tend to, especially since our area has been hit with a heat wave. Many kind thanks again! : )
