MORAINE LAKE

Moraine Lake ( Banff, Alberta, B.C.), is known as Valley of the Ten Peaks. This is where the Wenkchemna Peak Mountains are hard not to notice, rising from the valley background.
Not all the peaks are shown in the photo, but the ones that are shown from right to left are, Mount Fay at 3,235 metres ( 10,613 ft) high, Mount Little, 3,088 metres ( 10,131 ft) high, Mount Bowlen, 3,072 metres ( 10,079 ft) high, and Mount Tonsa at 3,057 metres ( 10,030 ft) high.
The tallest of the peaks that is not shown, is Deltaform Mountain at 3,424 metres ( 11,234 ft) high.
The Valley of the Ten Peaks was featured on the reverse side of the 1970 and 1978 issues of the Canadian twenty dollar bill.
Note; When we arrived later in the afternoon to Moraine Lake ( shot taken at 4:15 pm, Aug 2nd/08), the lighting was not conducive to taking shots of the mountain range and sky area (shown in the photo). I decided to take one shot set up for exposing the clouds and sky portion and another exposed for the treed and lake area. Unfortunately, I somehow managed to delete the one I took that was exposed for the trees and lake area, so I was left with the just the one photo. Needless to say, the treed and lake area was under exposed and worse off was the treed area. Shot in Raw file, I attempted to edit in Lightroom2. I decided to make two separate copies. I edited one for the treed and lake area and another separate copy of the same pic, for the mountain and sky portion. Than editing in photoshop CS2, I layered the two pics one on top of the other and preceded to paint back the mountain and sky portion of the better exposed copy for that area. After finishing there, I did a little more tweaking and I was surprised to finish up with not such a bad photo after all! This was my second ever visit to Moraine Lake and the first time, I was only ten years old and so the second visit brought back fond memories of visiting when just a child. It is nice to have this pic to remember my visit by!

These landscape really are something else, just so beautiful Sandy, a fav for me buddy..
Sandy Stewart replied
Thank you very much jason! Until this year, I really didn’t capture much in the way of landscapes. I took more in the way of macro and bird and wildlife type photos. It’s been a refreshing change to enjoy more in the way of landscape photography this year.

Sandy, When I last went to Lake Louise I saw the turn off for Lake Moraine while mountain biking and thought after seeing how beautiful Louise was that nothing could probably rival it,
I was mistaken. Absolutely awesome shot of an absolutely breathtaking scene. Timing is everything isn’t it?
Sandy Stewart
Thank you very much Steve! Wow, you biked it,....what an experience that must have been! The girlfriend who I was traveling with, mentioned how different it is to experience traveling the area on a motorcycle( which she had previously done a couple of times). While on our photo taking trip, she mentioned how different it would be to experience on a bike, because you would feel more like you were experiencing the environment more. We actually met up with a young fellow who had biked from Quebec and he said he was on his way to Vancouver B.C..
Yes, timing is certainly a big factor in pic taking and now that I have been there, I know on my next visit when to visit some areas when lighting is conducive to taking better photos! :)
