HAIRTRIGGER LAKE

Hairtrigger Lake can be reached by a hiking trail via Paradise Meadows, (located mid eastern, Courtenay area, Vancouver Island, B.C.). The hike is a 13.2 km round trip hike. The first half is pretty easy going, but once you leave Helen Mackenzie Lake to travel on upward to an elevation of 1200m, the trail gets somewhat rougher and traveling slower. Many entwining tree roots along the way, have one watching their footing, as does swampy areas and steeper inclines. It was a pretty warm mid August afternoon when my friend and I made our way up the trail. Due to the heat and sweating our way up, my friend decided the trail should be named “Sweat in the eye” trail. We enjoyed a few good laughs as we made our way up. Finally after 3 hrs and 20min of hiking, we made it to our destination! Like I had read on the internet, the views most certainly rewarded the hikers who made it up to Hairtrigger Lake!
Hairtrigger Lake was named by Clinton Wood to commemorate the time, in the 1930’s, when his party was out of food &, not wanting to return home, they went hunting for a deer in this area. He saw one but, in his excitement, pulled the trigger too soon, & missed the deer, which bounded away. So the party had to go back out empty handed, which was quite a journey in those days.
In the background one can see the peak of Mt Albert Edward ( just right of the center). Mt Albert Edward was named for Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, Later Kin Edward VII.
The surrounding alpine area is stunning and one couldn’t help but notice the sweet subtle scent of flowering Heather, as it drifted in the warm summer air!

Beautiful shot Sandy, love the colors and that lake has to be pristine. Did you go for a swim?, after a hike like that I would dive in.
Sandy Stewart replied
Thank you very much Marvin! No, I didn’t dive in, but I was certainly tempted! There was a lady that had been camping in the area who enjoyed a nice cool swim! She had mentioned to us, that “up here there are no clothes needed”! We were too busy getting in some pics, before we had to make our way back down the mountain. We only spent 40min taking pics, taking a quick break, snack and re-hydrating before making our decent back down the mountain. We left the truck at 9:30am and got back to the truck at 4:30pm. We spent about 1 hr 20 min in all taking pics and the rest was all hiking! lol

This is a magnificent landscape photograph, Sandy. At first, I thought it was another pic from you Rockies trip. I think I forgot how scenic it is right here on Vancouver Island.
Sandy Stewart replied
Thank you very much David! The whole time I was there, I kept thinking about how much it reminded me of the Jasper/Banff area. I felt as if I was in the Jasper/Banff area! lol Yes, we certainly do have some beautiful places here on the island too! It’s just a matter of figuring out where they are and how to get to them. lol This one took a good many hours of hiking!
