Sketch of a President: Barack Obama in Oil Pastels
Barack Obama is a voice for a new generation of national leadership that reorients our attention to the potential of diplomacy, to the threats of global estrangement, to bridges hitherto unforseen that link seemingly disparate ideas, peoples, nations. In this sense Barack Obama looks forward. Yet Barack Obama also has a historical quality to him. He is a classic statesman, a leader who would look at home in aged newsprint or an old newsreel. Barack Obama stands astride yesterday, today and tomorrow in his presentation of self and his charge to the country.
I have tried to capture the history of the now that Obama writes whenever he speaks with this sketched portrait, choosing sepia tones to express his timeful timelessness and sending his gaze to something bright beyond the page. Barack Obama brings shades of nuance to politics, and so I’ve sketched him in various shades (and at times no shade at all).
