I’ll never again march to a military band
On the parade ground; rifle in hand
No more Guard Commander, no Orderly Dog
No more weapon training or meal tickets to flog
No more late night spent pressing “best blues”
Nor early mornings bulling up shoes
No more sizing the Jankers Parade
Nor checking to see if my claim has been paid
I’ve said my good-byes and downed a few beers
What the hell happened to my twenty-odd years?
I met thousands of people and made many mates
But now for the last time I walk through the gates
I’ve cleared my last unit, had my final blue card
Just like joining up, only not quite as hard
I’d never had thought that my career would end
Me with a cash prize from the peace dividend
So farewell to The Few in the Officers’ Mess
Easier now – they’re a few thousand less
Farewell to the SWO and his military men
I’ll not meet the like, of his kind again
No more Mess bills and no more Mess halls
No Dining-In nights, no Summer Balls
‘cos now I’m a civvy, I’ve got my demob
And all I need now is to find me a job.
Farewell to The Few (that are left)
The end of a military career
