Fergie

My best friend Dave, I never thought

Your life so full, would be so short

Encouraging and inspiring me

Then finding yours was not to be

In youth we ranged far and wide

Mile upon mile our wheels would glide

Moor and mountain, hill and dales

Filling young lives with minor tales

Your Scots passion pushed us on

Through Carlisle and Hawick we were gone

A week that saw six hundred miles

A mix of blood, sweat, tears and smiles

At Carter Bar we pushed through snow

With many more miles still to go

Through the Yorkshire Dales we roamed

Taking us the long way home

Away to study was your life’s call

Until cut down by an Alpine fall

The tragic end that you were blessed

Just doing something that you loved best

I guess your life was meant to be
Short and sweet – as a lesson to me

Living life and being bold

As there are some who don’t grow old

My best freind died (aged nineteen) in a fatal Alpine climbing accident in the Seventies, he is never far from my thoughts and will never leave me. We had such adventures together as youngsters – he had intended to join the RAF as an officer, I decided not to wait and joined as an erk. Strange how life unfolds…
