En Passant
THE SUBJECT:
No.1244 was one of the many female participants in the 2008 Panthers Ironman Triathlon and was just into her 2nd lap of the cycling stage.
The title is a particular move in the game of Chess.
THE LOCATION:
At the top of William Street in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia.
THE MAKING of ‘En Passant’:
The day was dull, the light fluctuated from poor to poorer and while the exposure would be spot on for the contestants, the sky and very bright things were blown out. This is why I processed the RAW photograph for a B&W conversion in Photoshop CS and am very happy with the result.
I am especially taken by the action blur of the opposite cyclists made by my panning the camera.
Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/200sec @ f/4.5, ISO80, Hand held.
S7RAW and Photoshop CS.

On the advice of a Federation of Camera Clubs NSW accredited judge I have removed a distracting blurred pedestrian from the image’s top right corner. I must admit it made an improvement.

GREAT TITLE< you chessman!
Very few people know this chess move, and now you have illustrated it perfectly in b-w! Bravo!
Dennis Gay replied
G’day DR,
Good to see you in Port for the IronMan event.
Thank you so much for your most interesting and encouraging “GREAT…” comment for my mono panning efforts.
It has been a very long time since I played a game of chess. I doubt if I could remember all the moves any more. Check!

My thanks to all who have supported this work as without such encouragement and support this may well be still lingering somewhere in my hard drive never to see the light of competition.

Nicely done and I appreciate the reference to Chess, do you play?
Dennis Gay
Yowza Mr EVANS!
Happy to see you found a spot along the foothpath to get a good view of this Ironman cycling scene.
Heaps big thanks for the encouragement and support of your “Nicely done…” wrap for my B&W panning effort.
I used to play a fair bit many, many years ago, I doubt if my skill level was ever very high but I did enjoy a good game. In 1972-3 I worked with an Hungarian gentleman who happened to be a State Champion some time in his life and under his steely gaze I learned quite a bit. I was totally blitzed in our first match in a matter of minutes so he kindly allowed me to play against him without his Queen on the board until I could beat him. After many months of frustration I finally beat him and brashly told him to put his Queen back on the board. I never won another game against him.
The last game I played was about three years ago against my 10yo Grandson and I could hardly put a plan of attack together as I had forgotten most of what I had learned all those years ago.
