Fresh Meat
Can you see it? No bigger than your thumbnail, camouflaged so well in its floral environment is a little Diaea evanida (Flower Spider), getting ready to dine on its freshly caught Flower Wasp.
I made this photograph beside a trail at the south end of the Sea Acres Nature Reserve in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a bright, sunny summer day.

Anne Smyth
we have a spider very like that, size, shape, transluscence, called the Goldenrod Spider I believe – white with a red racing stripe or bright yellow like the goldenrod itself. I have one in my portfolio somewhere…This is a great capture – I love the spider. What is the flower?
Dennis Gay replied
G’day Anne,
This is a very commn Aussie spider that can be found almost anywhere there are flowers. They are also a photographer’s dream as by having one in a floral shot you add another element of interest.
You caught me! I don’t have a clue what plant the flower belongs to. If I find out I will let you know. 8-)
Good to see you are first along the trail to spot this tiny predator.
Your very interesting information and most encouraging ”...great capture…” comment is greatly appreciated.

It took my slow eyes a few seconds but yes, fantastic Dennis. :)
Dennis Gay replied
G’day Max,
If the darned thing had not moved so I could see the glint of light reflected from the wasp’s wings, I would have walked right on by. 8-)
Good to see you finally spotted this tiny predator.
Your most encouraging ”…fantastic…” comment is greatly appreciated mate.

Quite a few times now while on a photographic safari, whenever I spot something very small on or in the bushes, a camera club friend has remaked; “How does he see ‘em?” Well I can’t explain it, I just do! 8-)

What an amazing shot, Dennis! It took me a little while to locate the spider, but it was so well camoflaged that I was looking through it, rather than at it. Well done! (And you know how much I love spiders…)
