On the Smithy's Wall #2

On the Smithy's Wall #2

THE SUBJECT:
Rusting old tools from a bygone age hanging on a blacksmith’s wall bathed in a golden afternoon light.
Not only are these tools not used any more but there are fewer and fewer people who know what they were used for.

THE LOCATION:
This Still Life was photographed at Timbertown, an historic theme park at Wauchope, west of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a lightly overcast summer day.

THE MAKING of ‘On the Smithy’s Wall #2’:
The shot was made using natural light and a longish exposure from inside the Blacksmith’s shop with low diffused light washing in from the open double door. Another example of how I photograph the light and not just the subject so I can create a mood shot not a snapshot.
This is a close-up crop made from the original “On the Smithy’s Wall #1”, suggested by a fellow camera club member that you can see here if you wish.
Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/ 8 @ 1.5sec, ISO80, Tripod, Timer.
S7RAW & Photoshop CS.

Visit the Rust & Machinery collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more ferrous oxide and decay.

UPDATE: 16-9-09
These rusty old tools have been FEATURED in the Rusty, Crusty and Falling to Bits Group.

Enjoy!

BEAUTIFUL PHOTO DG. I’M MUST SIT AT YOUR FEET MORE TO LISTEN AND LEARN. THE MORE I TRY, THE MORE FRUSTRATED I GET WITH THOSE LONGISH EXPOSURE. I WOULD GO BACK TO BASICS IF I ONLY KNEW WHERE THE BASICS BEGAN. I’M NOT SURE THIS DIGITAL STUFF EVEN HAS A BEGINNING. SAVE ME A COPY OF YOUR NEXT BOOK, I’M FIRST IN LINE TO LEARN ALL ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING LIGHT RATHER THAN SUBJECT.

“Lesson 1: Don’t even take the camera out of the bag until you have fully assesed the scene before you, making special note of exactly what the light is doing to the subject by walking around and looking at it from different angles, left-right-up-down, frontal lighting, side lighting, back lighting or lit from above.” 8-)

Mate, as I said to Yellow Jacket above, just sit and study the light on the subject then walk around to find your best angle and build your exposure around that. Don’t wait too long though or the light will slip away. 8-)
