Morelia spilota cheynei (Jungle Carpet Python)
THE SUBJECT:
This massive and beautifully coloured and patterned snake is a wonderful specimen of Morelia spilota cheynei (Carpet Python).
THE LOCATION:
It was photographed during an annual event held between the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club and the local North Coast Herpetological Group called ‘Snakes Alive!’ We meet at a property owned by one of my fellow camera club members at Kundabung between Port Macquarie and Kempsey, NSW, Australia, for a photographic session with all their various reptiles and a BBQ. (No, we bring out own meat!)
THE MAKING OF ‘Morelia spilota cheynei (Jungle Carpet Python)’:
Making this photograph was real thrill for me as I was only centimetres away fro the snake’s head and had fantastic eye contact with it during the shoot.

Dennis, did you get to hold her? My son has a ball phthon (Python regius) she’s just a baby about 45cm long. They are amazing critters and thier eyes—it’s like being in a constand stare down.
Dennis Gay replied
G’day Bryan,
I did not get to hold any of the reptiles that day but at last year’s “Snakes Alive!” meeting I had a few crawling over me as I was trying to photograph them. Great experience! I look forward to this year’s show.
Thank you for calling in to Kundabung and leaving your interesting comment.

Nice image Dennis.
I think you will find this is a Carpet Python, Morelia Spilota, a natural intergrade found in Port Macquarie and its surrounds. Often now refered to as Port Macquarie Carpets.
Have a look at my shots of some Jungles and you will be able to spot the difference.
I love snakes, in case you can’t tell!

G’day Steve,
Many thanks for your “Nice image…” wrap for this very willing python. Glad to see you make the trip to Kundabung.
Thank you too for your accurate identification of this snake. I was a bit unsure of the name I gave it. I’ll amend my narrative immediately. Well spotted that man!
