Rock Fishermen #2

Dennis Gay

Rock Fishermen #2

These two dedicated and undaunted rock fishermen were photographed from Tacking Point, at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a sunny winter afternoon.

The swell was perfect for this kind of break and the anglers were in good position to be on intersecting “Rule of Thirds” lines for a good composition. The break was way more than I had hoped for and the winter afternoon light was magic.

Camera: Fuji S9600; RAW; Aperture Priority; f/8; 1/320sec; 39mm; WB Daylight; ISO 80; Hand held.
Processing: S7RAW & Photoshop CS.

What a fantastic shot! it captures perfectly both the allure and the risk for these rock fishermen – crazy buggers! I used to live at Manly as a child, and would watch them on the rocks at the bottom of North Head – scary stuff!

    Judith Winde

Wow, this is superb! Nothing shows the oceans’ strength and power better than a huge wave breaking against rocks, yet, very litle is more beautiful…or potentially dangerous. ( I hope these fishermen completed their fishing without mishap.) This is an absolutely stunning capture!

  • Dennis Gay replied

    G’day Judith,

    You little bewdy, another “Wow…”!!!!!
Many thanks for that. So glad this shot has caught your eye and imagination.
These fishermen are quite safe where they are. They and many others are regularly seen along the coast at Port Macquarie trying to catch their dinner.

Whilst enjoying the compositon and drama, am I mainly thinking is the man a complete loon still standing on the rock! Is the next one in the series ‘man washed out to sea’?

    Carumba JANE!

Great to have you with me at this little fishermen’s cove.
Muchos gracias Senora for your most appreciative and encouraging comment and for the question posed by your remarks.
These men were quite safe really. It looks as though they are right near the water due to my elevated point of view but were in fact high and dry. They are most probably very experienced rock fishermen and by fishing as a duo they increase the safety factor.
