Thelionema caespitosum (Tufted Blue Lily)
This beautiful Australian wildflower is a fine specimen of Thelionema caespitosum (Tufted Blue Lily).
It was photographed along the Ocean Drive Fire Trail in the Queen’s Lake Nature Reserve just south of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a wonderful spring day.
These little lovelies really stand out among all the native grasses and though they grow fairly sparsely can look quite impressive in a drift.

G’day Prasad,
Thank you so much for your very interesting and poetic comment for this little blue beauty. Your encouragement and support are most appreciated mate.
That “sparkle” you see is on most of the wildflowers I have come across and always looks good if I get the angle of light right.

Excellent close-up of the Tufted Blue Lily! (I love the fact that you also included the name of the flower, both in English and Latin, with your photo.) Beautiful lighting & color (love that shade of purple), excellent focus & DOF, wonderful compostion!
Dennis Gay replied
G’day Judith,
These flowers are a strange colour. While they are caled “blue” it really depends on the angle of light as to just what colour/s you will see. They go from a rich blue to an almost purple and at times something in between. Very gaudy against the much duller colours of their surroundings.
Your visit and your interesting and most encouraging review for this piece is much appreciated.

G’day MARVIN, DEB, JULIE, SHARON & ADGRAY,
Oh yeah! 5x very big THANK YOUs to you all for your great collection of most encouraging comments for this vivid wildflower. I am so glad you have all enjoyed the experience.
I have found that mid to late afternoon is the best time to photograph these and many other wildflowers as not only is the light so good but by that time of day any flowers which popped their buds that morning will still be fresh and fully opened by then.
I also like to move around the subjects to photograph the shadow affect the light creates as you can see here.
Deb: I would say they are loosely related as they are both members of native lily species. There are many more in the wider family too. Stay tuned.
