Ghost Fungus & Fungus Gnat
THE SUBJECT:
A fine specimen of Omphalotus nidiformis (Ghost Fungus) and his tiny companion, a handsome Fungus Gnat of the species Sciarid.

Photographed off the track in the Kattang Nature Reserve , Dunbogan , NSW, New South Wales, Australia, on a winter afternoon.
THE MAKING OF ‘Ghost Fungus & Fungus Gnat’:

Ooooh we could grow these in case of blackouts! What a fascinating find Dennis. The sheen on this fungi is stunning – natural light?
Prasad
I do agree with Rosalie, stunning. Do want to ask ask same Q?
Dennis Gay
G’day ROSALIE & PRASAD,
I have read that some of our pioneers used these for reading at night at times.
As mentioned in the description, I used a very low powered pop-up flash for this as the ambient light was just too dim for a good exposure.
Thank you both for your double-bunger of very encouraging comments for this unusual fungus. So glad it caught your collective eye.

G’day MARVIN, JESIKA & SHARON,
Your triple whammy of very encouraging comments for this unusual fungus is much appreciated folks.
I had read that these fungi glowed in the dark so I went back the next afternoon before sundown, set up my camera on a tripod and waited, waited, waited. It became as black as pitch and NO GLOW! Disappointed and eaten alive by mosquitoes, I headed back home. When I read some more about them I discovered that they only glow on moonlit nights!! Duh! I have yet to see them glow but I would really like to. Finding a mature specimen again seems difficult as I have not seen any more since that day.

My Goodness….Its a lovely specimen Dennis!!! Perfect capture!!! Ive only ever seen them once ‘glowing’ in the dark!!! Wonderful…..
Dennis Gay
G’day Deb,
Does this now mean you will be getting out into the bush hunting fungi? It’s a very rewarding part of photography and with only the modicum of extra lighting gear you can set each shot up like a mini studio. My aim at the moment is to find a blue one and a green one.
Thank you so much for your ”...Wonderful…..” wrap for this incredible fungal effort.
I have seen a photograph of one of these glowing. I’d ove to see one in the wild.
