Boorganna Silhouette
This very different birdie silhouette was part inspiration and part accident.
The photograph was made from the picnic ground at the Boorganna National Park , outside the township of Comboyne , NSW, Australia.
I arrived there late on an early summer’s afternoon and had spent some time along the steep and zigzagging trail in the rainforest hunting for fungi. I had no luck there and the weather closed in, all grey and menacing so I high-tailed it out of the forest and was having a spell on a bench in the picnic area until I headed back home.
I spotted this little Bush Wren flitting about the dead branch in a lovely silhouette against a leaden sky so I tried a hand held shot at full 10x zoom at 300mm just to see what would come of it.
Fuji S5500: f/3.1 @ 1/480sec, ISO64, EC +2, Hand held.
S7RAW & Photoshop CS.
Note: After initial processing in the S7RAW program the image was further processed in PSCS and was a nightmare as I twiddled and adjusted Highlights, Midtones, Shadows, Levels, Contrast and Saturation trying to make a silk purse out of a pig‘s ear because the image was so dull and lifeless.
I was just about ready to relegate it to the virtual rubbish bin when I tried a colour inversion with the Invert function. That was a failure so I hit the Equalise function. WHOA! What you see is the result which blew what remains of my little mind.
I then set about wielding the Clone Stamp to clear away intrusive and protruding twigs to further isolate the bird.

I ended up with this result simply because I did not want to let go of an image that at the time, I really liked. I would still have preferred to have made “the” photograph of this scene instead of relying on Photoshop. But I do like the result – that’s why it’s here.
