Pro Slalom Winner
THE SUBJECT:
This young lady is only 18 years old and already a Pro Champ!
She was the only skier (men included) who was able to successfully complete the second run. This was taken on the first turn of her third run on a very short ski-rope. She fell on the third turn but her run was good enough for her to win the competition.

THE LOCATION:
The photograph was made at the Stoney Creek Holiday Park, Telegraph Point water skiing complex of man-made lakes, just north of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia.
THE MAKING of ‘Pro Slalom Winner’:
It took a few shots earlier on to get the timing right and I was sooooo glad that my timing and pre-focussing work with this one.

It took me a few shots to work out the best way for me to photograph this action. A tripod helped but it was the 1/1000sec shutter speed and the timing that made it possible.

Mate, this is one of the finest compositions I have ever seen in action shots.
Now, where do I start? Well, the spray made by her sharp turn is not only gorgeous, it’s also so beautifully lighted and frozen by your 1/1000th of a second. The orange buoy is geniously both in colour and in position. The skillful and very elegant young lady is likewise geniously situated within the frame. Just enough air in front of her for her action. Both the wakes of her waterski and the boat put further action to the scene. Very nice, dark background to the frozen spray. Beautiful tight cut in both top and bottom of the photo. The exposure and the processing is, of course, perfect.
Well, I guess that was it. I think you’ve got a winner here, Dennis.

Wow this is fantastic Dennis. I see skiers on the river out here all the time, and have seen the Bridge to Bridge on the Hawksbury River, heaps of times, but never seen this sort of comp and definitely not this action live. Like Rosalie before me, I totally agree with Kofoed. Well done ! ! !

The whole event, including a junior wakeboarding championship, was held over two full weekends. Day 1 was more a learning curve as I discovered that 1/1000sec shutter speed + circular polarizer = very, very bad under exposure. Days 2 & 3 were filled with a lot of hard work photographing all the different action and Day 3 was a bit of a dud as the weather was bad. All in all though my two camera club mates and I had a great time and can’t wait to get to the next championships.
