Broken Hearts #4
This very unusual waterscape was photographed at Hearts Point, (Neranie Head), in the Myall Lakes system, between Newcastle and Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a most grey, overcast and damp summer day.
Thousands of pieces of timber lie fully or partially submerged all over this part of the headland. They are known as “hearts” and are the off-cuts from the centre wood of felled ironbark and turpentine trees which were cut in the 1880s. These cast offs were deliberately placed out into the water to form a sort of breakwater to protect the ships and barges when unloading their cargos of timber. Over time storm and silt and occasionally the ha d of man have shifted these timbers around and left this strange waterscape.
Though the weather was foul that day it made fantastic contrasts so my exposure and processing was aimed at producing monochrome images of this odd piece of Aussie history.

Beautifully done Dennis! I love the way you have composed this one, and the way all the pieces are pointing the same way. Also the slim bare forelorn tree leaning the same way! Hinting that one day it may fall to join them. Lovely shot and excellent bit of history. Well done.
Dennis Gay
G’day Craig,
What a great wrap for this strange monochrome! Many thanks for your extremely encouraging and very interesting comments.
I had never heard of this place nor seen anything like it before so it was quite a surprise when I first clapped eyes on this watery graveyard.

fantastic shot Denis, love the atmosphere in this,,, the black and white is fantastic,,,, well done
Rosalie Dale IPA
All those shadows from the timber are creating arrowheads pointing to the tree!!! Looks like a great entry for the mono section at the Club
Kofoed
Gosh, Dennis. From the 1880’s? That must be some hard pieces of wood!
I think you have outdone yourself with this composition. It’s so shrewd. All the lumps sticking out of the water, all pointing away from a point in the grassy lump, which in turn is placed in a nice spot. Keep your cropping tools away, they won’t be needed here!
Very nice B&W processing, mate. And thanks for the odd story.

wow, beautiful image Dennis, like the way you have captured the wood pointing and the amazing reflections they cast, wonderful composition and perfect b/w

My utmost thanks for your interest in my watery mono and for leaving your encouraging and discerning comment.
You are right about the tonality and the use of a circular polarizing filter helped bring out the detail of the sunken timbers in the foreground.
