Fretwork Abstract
THE SUBJECT:
A fretwork design in a gate that really caught my eye due to the very high contrast caused by the angle of sunlight.
THE LOCATION:
Photographed in a suburban street in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a brilliant winter day.
THE MAKING OF ‘Fretwork Abstract’:
I had driven past this gate many times and wondered about the photographic possibilities of the design.
On this particular day the gate was shut, (which a good thing) and the angle of the sun made the best contrast of this suburban scene I had seen to date.
I shot at an angle shallow enough so I could not see through the holes yet see the grain in the saw cuts.
I exposed for the extreme highlights in the cuts while maintaining a good depth of field across the pattern.
I chose a very heavy B&W conversion using the Colour Channels for the more dramatic and abstract effect.
Fuji S9600: RAW, f/4 @ 1/1200sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held.
Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3.
