The Blues Brothers #1 (Entoloma hochstetteri)

THE SUBJECT:
A very rare find. Two fine specimens of the fruiting body of the Entoloma hochstetteri fungus in the natural light of a slightly overcast autumn day.

THE LOCATION:
Along a track in the Kattang Nature Reserve, Dunbogan, NSW, Australia.

THE MAKING of ‘The Blues Brothers #1 (Entoloma hochstetteri)’:
Out on a fungi hunt with a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate, we were only 150 metres from the car park when we saw the beautiful blue of these fungi poking up from the leaf litter.
As I had never seen any blues in my almost four years of fungi hunting, I was as excited as a kid at Christmas with this find.
This photograph is brought to you after much pain and discomfort as I was bitten by a bull ant, my mate was bitten by a leech and we were both bitten by mosquitoes. The things we do…..!
Fuji S9600: RAW, Super macro, Manual settings of f/3.6 @ 1/60sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Timer, Camera on ground.
Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.

Visit the Fungi & Lichen collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more fungal delights.

NOTE:
I lightened the image slightly and gave the saturation a little tweak for printing on Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss Media and it did a marvellous job on the blues.

Interesting that they are blue. Never saw that before either.
Now I have the Blue’s Brothers song in my head.. lol
    Great find and photograph. :)

  • Dennis Gay replied

    Cheers Sheryl!

Good to see you braving the leeches, bull ants and mosquitoes to get a look at these blue beauties.
Thank you heaps for your uplifting and most encouraging ”...Great…” wrap for my fungal photography.

Blue is a very uncommon colour in the Aussie bush and to me it seems so strange to see these poking up from the leaf litter.
These are one of three blue species we have here. My next target is to find a green species.

Now I’m sure that I can find this guy here, but I’ll have to wait until next season. By the way, it is usually called Entoloma virescens here, and Entoloma hochstetteri in NZ. It is also found in Japan (of all places).

  • Dennis Gay replied

    G’day Steve!

Thank you for taking an interest in “The Brothers”. They were really an amazing find for me.
In the limited on line research available to me it seemed like these fungi were “hochstetteri” due to the slight magenta tinge to the gills. From what I read “virescens” does not have that feature.

    GB
    Dennis

  • Steve Axford

    Steve Axford

Interesting comment – but if true then it must be virescens because it is found in Australia. On the other hand, I am led to believe that small differences in colour are not a characteristic that can be used to identify mushrooms as they can vary a lot.

  • Dennis Gay replied

Hmmmmm! Further research require methinks Steve. The trouble is that there is such little information about the species. Looks like another job for my Fungi Guru.
