Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax Lily) #2
These very pretty little blue dainty dangling flowers are Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax Lily) a very common native in my part of the world and a delight to photograph as the morning or afternoon light has a great effect on them. They can be a difficult subject to shoot though due to the habitat in which they grow and that they flower randomly along the stem, many times with a relatively big gap between flowers. Finding one with a lot of flowers blooming at the same time is a rarity.
The shot was made along a track in the Diamond Head area of Crowdy Bay National Park, Laurieton, NSW, Australia on a lovely spring morning. The subject was well lit by the morning sun shining over my right shoulder and a dark, rough tree trunk provided a very good natural background.
Fuji S9600: RAW, Super Macro, f/4.5 @ 1/75sec, Manual focus, Tripod, Timer.
Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.

Aha – that’s what they are!!! I also found some of these last weekend. They are so small – what a great shot Dennis – excellent detail!

G’day Rosalie,
Good to see you out along the Diamond Head track on my wildflower safari and that you are the very first Bubbler to comment on my li’l flax lily.
Thank you so much for your complimantray and encouraging ”...excellent detail!” wrap for my wild native floral efforts.
These are always a target species each spring as I am out to get what I consider to be the “ultimate blue flax lily shot”. The trick is to find just the right plant with just the right flowers in just the right light at just the right time. Not much to ask eh?!
They are coming into berry about now and the berries can make a good photograph if you can get immature green ones with mature purple ones and if you have a flower thrown in as well you are really onto a winner! 8-)
