Thanks Everyone for such lovely feedback, Eilean Donon and Mont Saint Michel are my two top places we visited, and this was my favourite shot from the night (well that I’ve found so far). And I’m lucky to have got it, I quickly changed lenses in the last 10 minutes I was allowed there and grabbed this with the beautiful and tack sharp 50 1.4. Glad I did as this lens does beautiful things in conditions like this, I think I’ll be buying a few of these at Xmas for presents for the family :)

You kicked a goal with this one Craig. Great separation of the main subject from the rest of the image and the reflections adding an interesting viewpoint back into the rest of the image.

Absolutely stunning! The colours are so dramatic. The reflections balance the work out really well.

Oh my gosh! This is beyond gorgeous!!!! Absolutely breathtakingly magical. The lighting, reflections, and everything about this shot is pure perfection.

I’ve yet to visit, but I’ve always felt such a strange, otherworldly connection to the Eilean Doan site. This picture is a treasure to me, and it just makes me want more the chance to spend a little time there.

Jen – I definitely suggest you set aside the good part of a day if you can. We were there from just after 4pm till almost midnight (in Summer it will be different in winter, I’d have loved a snowy version as well). During the time we were there the moody and character changed as the day lengthen and slowly night set in, so really if you can set aside a good portion of time. The pub nearby does a great dinner too.

I understand why this picture has stayed on the home page this is very pretty. You captured the beauty an serinity very well in deed.

Would ditto suffice? .... stunning picture, I love it, the colours are amazing. Where in Scotland is this, I have to go!

Just a bit west of Loch Ness, on the way to Kyle of Lochlash, on Loch Duich I believe. It is a super popular attraction so you’ll have no trouble find directions, but it is a bit out of the way, but well worth the drive.

Never been to Scotland, you sure make it enticing. I love the whole mood the picture has. The castle brings the warmth from the cold of the Loch. Beautiful photo.

Imageworld – it’s in Scotland so you could drive there in a day (it would be a long day, but we did it on our way back and other then having to go on the M25 parking lot) it was pretty doable. In Australia thing are just so much further away.

When I saw the thumbnail, .. “scotland” was my first thought..
This is more than wonderful, it’s dreamland.

G’day Craig!
I looks like I am Visitor No.59 to leave a comment on this photograph. I was prompted by your request for some hard critiquing and could not resist taking a peek.
The previous 58 people have left a shed full of well deserved superlatives so all I can do on the positive is to agree wholeheartedly.
HOWEVER!
Not one of the previous “reviewers” has mentioned that the image is badly tilted to our right and that unless something is done quickly to straighten it, all our monitors will be filled with water and the castle will slip off the island and into the Loch! ;)
There are many programs out there with tha facility to roatate an image to ‘level the waterline/straighten the castle walls’. Photoshop is but one. The image will need to be cropped after levelling so whatever program you chose should have that ability also.
The cropping will do something else that needs your attention. It will remove all or part of those two little orange light sources on our right of frame which are not only encroachments but are also distractions.
I only know how to use Photoshop CS so if you have access to this program you will be able to do these adjustments with ease. If so, because the castle is so close to our right edge of frame, I suggest that you make the crop as minimal as possible and use the Clone Stamp to remove any remaining evidence of those two lights.
There are two lessons to be learned here:
1. Get yourself a tripod with spirit levels fitted on it and carefully set it up for the shot, and
2. Don’t fill the viewfinder with your subject. Instead allow plenty of space aorund it, even if there are fringe elements in the frame as they can be eliminated later when resizing and cropping at the beginning of your digital image processing. It also makes allowance just in case you still have a “tilt in yerrr kilt!” ;)
You have made a very interesting and enjoyable photograph. The defects are readily rectified and the lessons learned should prevent them happening again.

What is inport on about, sorry, the land may be a funny angle but that’s because it’s natural, just look at the roof lines and they are perfectly level. Craig, great shot, could use this for anything. Scotland is one of my favourite places to visit. Keep up the good work.

Pboast – This and only time I’ve been to the UK, we did a whirlwind tour of the UK, 3 Weeks going from Brighton up to Eilean Donan and back down covering a lot of kms, and seeing some great sites (albeit in the rain).

The thing I think is most superb about this photo is the contrast between the castle and the surroundings. There is contrast between warm and cool colors, nature and artifact, and placidly smooth versus rough textures. This makes the photo not only beautiful, but interesting as well.

This is beautiful. I have photographed Eilean Donan Castle from all angles but have never achieved a shot like this. I do have a huge oil painting of it looking from St Augustus over to the Isle of Skye.It is without a doubt my favourite painting. You have done wonders here. Blessings Hilary
