Tall Poppy
Rising above the rest, this poppies budding bloom caught the late afternoon sunlight and was just begging to be photographed. Part of a get back to nature session my camera and I were having.

Gorgeous light and incredible clarity. Love the tiny hairs, the bright red and green against the black. I think your back to nature session must have been a good day!

This was shot with a borrowed Tamron 90mm on my D700, a great combination for close up work, takes a little patience with the wind to get it sharp, but when it works, is sharp as a tack.

The lighting is wonderful Craig. Is it backlit? Tell me, do you have a specific macro lens for this? I know nothing about macro but I’d love to be able to do it. Whenever I try to focus this close I can’t…
Craig Goldsmith replied
Hi Mel,
Yes I was using a borrowed macro lens, a Tamron 90mm AF lens, it allows for focusing up very very close, in this case I wasn’t that close and cropped the end image down a little. (The close you get the harder it is to nail the focus in the windy conditions). The flower was heavily backlit in the late afternoon sun, so I had to add a little on camera fill flash to bring up the foreground side (-2 EV from memory), just to brighten it up a little. The tamron is a cheaper alternative to the Nikon lenses, I’ve also on another occasion used the Sigma 150mm which was also very good. I must say you do need to be patient sometimes with macro photography as it can be a bit fiddly.
