Old Cliff Face
Prime Minister Thornton led Britain for 4 of its’ arguably finest years. He had vision, compassion and honour. But he was a terrible worrier. He became affectionately known as ‘old cliff face’ due to the deep lines forever present on his brow. Even when the Country was at its’ peak, old cliff face would most often be found in his favourite chair next to the window overlooking Westminster, but he rarely enjoyed the view. His secretary would bring him tea every day. And every day she would ask him what worried him. You would expect him to possibly say the frightening progression of technology, or the increasing cost of coal or perhaps mention the war with the Russians. But old cliff face would always look up at her smiling and say; ‘Oh the usual Margaret. That damned greenfly thats attacking my poor roses’.
