I’ve always been fascinated with the Hans Christian Andersen tale ‘The Tinderbox’. It seemed so spooky and violent with it’s slobbering dogs and the unecessary killing of the witch by the soldier. In my version dogs have been replaced with soft pawed cats guarding the treasure and the witch is rewarded for her help.
“Ah!” there sat the cat, with the eyes as large as teacups, staring at him.
“You’re a pretty fellow,” said the soldier, seizing him, and placing him on the witch’s apron, while he filled his pockets from the chest with as many gold pieces as they would hold.
