Cottages of blackened stone by

Traditional stone mill cottages at Abbey Village,Lancashire UK. There used to be a working cotton mill here and these are the old mill cottages for the workers. The smallest , simplest ones were nearer the mill and bigger more ornate ones further away. These were for the higher ranks! The oldest ones were built in 1840 and the main part of the village grew up around the mill. I like the way that most of them have not been cleaned up as they give the village main street its character. I think the ones that have been sand blasted spoil the row, so do the conservation people. The satellite dishes also spoil the character of the village.

Canon7D with canon 70-200mm L lens @ 100mm. HDR from single RAW @ 1 ev spacing and tonemapped in photomatix pro. completed in cs4.

Almost retired, and a photography addict! I own a canon 7D and 5 canon lenses. I love playing in photoshop! I’m a fan of HDR if it isn’t too overdone.I also dabble in fractal art occasionally.

Beautiful shot, interesting too, well preserved street.

  • Thanks. It would have been better if some people had not cleaned the stone or put up satellite dishes!

Lovely capture Sandra,so indicative of a Lancashire terraced row of mill workers houses.Bet they had the long drop outdoor loos until 20 years ago as well.x

  • LOl, at the end of the row I bet! The village grew up around the mill.
