Clover living

So many four leaf clovers
Waiting to be found.
They hide themselves
Amongst the three leafs
Saying to themselves,
‘I am special
I have an extra leaf.
People are lucky
If they find me!’
Lazy picnickers
Search for them
To press between books
And put on gift cards.
Children pick them
And say, ‘Mummy look—’
At pubs the bartender
Tries to make
Four leaf clovers
On the Guinness.
Sometimes succeeding
So well that
Five leaf clovers
Are made.

I once found
Some five leaf clovers.
I was trying to roller-skate
And sat down
On a hill
Then started to search
The patch of clovers.
I put the five-leaf clovers
In my back pocket
And they got crushed
Along with my belief
That I could skate
When I fell over
Several times.
I couldn’t put the clovers
In my books to press
Because it’d look like
I’d taken a three leaf
And added extra leaves.

Finding an abundance
Of extra leaves on clovers
Had the opposite effect
Of giving me luck.
My rent went up,
I lost my job
And I realised
I was not in love.
But the clovers did things
Like make the subtext
Of what cats were thinking
Auditable to me.
I started to realise
A lot of strange things
That went on
In the universe
That I drew
As a womb
Expanding and contracting.

I decided it was time
I went wandering
In places around the country
That did not know me.
Then I started looking
For other things
Other than extra leaves
On the clover.
Sometimes I just
Had to walk into a sunset.
Other times
I had to take a ride
Across the ocean waves.
Then there were mountains
To climb.
I forgot to look for clovers.
Besides, so many things
Were freaking me out,
That I didn’t want
To search for freaks.
