Fair water use, Australia

For those interested in environmental issues and awareness in the Murry_Darling basin have a look at this lobby group Fair Waer Use

Fair Water Use (Australia) is a new lobby group formed by Australians from all walks of life, with a shared vision of a revived Murray-Darling basin and the sustainable environmental, community and economic benefits that would flow from its recovery.

After the recent rains in Queensland, the dams on Cubbie Station now contain over three years supply of water which will be used for the cultivation of cotton in a country ravaged by drought.

Thanks for the link Mark – an interesting read.

It’s hard to see the logic of our governing bodies just now. As you mention, we are allowing corporations to divert water to produce crops so water intensive and the funds are going OS. We are in a drought and by allowing this to happen we are effectively starving our farmers and primary producers further down the Murray-Darling system.

Then to confound matters there is the new pipline draining what little water the Goulburn Valley has left taking it to Melbourne via Yea and the Yarra Valley. This pipline is a waste of time, money and resources, also at the expense of those already doing it tough. The pipline has been pushed through without consultation and instead of using available government easements along roadsides, the powers that be have decided that they need to preserve our roadside reserves and are running the pipline through a 15m easement on the front of properties along it’s route. By the time this pipline is complete the Goulburn Valley may well be dry or if we’re lucky the drought may have broken and the pipline will still be a waste.

It seems that the Government wants to be seen as “doing something” but hasn’t taken the time to investigate the best solutions – it’s just going for the “quickfix” options.

Don’t even get me started on the de-salination plant ….......ahhhhhhh!
