The Sigma 10-20 is a valid substitute for the Canon 10-22.

Not keen on the 24-105 myself, not until I get a 135 format digital body anyway, 24 just isn’t that wide on an APS-C body.

70-200 is a very nice lens, regardless of body, but the f/2.8 version would mean you wouldn’t lose autofocus with the 2x extender. Speaking of 2x extenders, I could see me getting one at some stage. The image quality of the 70-200/2.8L IS with 2x is fairly acceptable (not as sharp as the 100-400 @ 400mm native, but definitely usable).

The 24-105 will make an adequate sharper replacement for my 28-105, and the IS will be useful for low-light (with minimal subject movement anyway).

I should still retain autofocus on the f4 with a 2x extender from what i’ve read – however ymmv I guess.

Essentially I’m aiming to overhaul my current lens kit (and add a wider one into the mix).

    From that very article:
“Keep in mind that many non-pro Canon camera bodies need a minimum wide open aperture setting of f/5.6 for autofocus to work. Canon 1-Series camera bodies generally require f/8 for autofocus to work. “

Since you lose 2 stops with the 2x (1 stop with the 1.4x), you’ll end up at a wide-open aperture of f/8 which means that on anything other than a 1 series camera you’ll have no AF. (This I know from personal experience, I’ve tried it myself on the 400D).

Oh well, I guess I’ll scrap the 2x extender from the list. It’s a luxury anyway really, I don’t shoot a lot of telephoto.

Well I’ll take the 2x off you then ;-)

It’ll work fine on my 70-200/2.8L IS.

Actually, manual focus with a TC isn’t that bad, I did a bit with the 100-400L + 1.4x TC recently, and it’d be even better if I had a better focussing screen.

Shaun: I just recently sold my 24-105/4L IS. Didn’t know you were in the market for one.

  • Shaun Johnston replied

Well, I’m not in the market yet, hence the ‘wish list’ ;)

I will probably start the climb to acquire some of this gear next year.

One other thing: The Canon extenders do not work with the 24-105.

In fact, they work only with any L-series prime 135mm or longer, plus all four 70-200s and the 100-400.

All I have for sale at the moment is a 20D (with lens and battery grip).
