Gear Porn

I think there is a point in every budding photographer’s life where one takes stock of one’s gear, thinks “holy christ!” and decides to share it with the world. I am at one of those points.

Behold!

Taken with the 450D and the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM II (obviously not present in the shot).

i think that i’d need a large format camera to fit it all in one photo – very little in the way of 35mm !:)

Geeze, that’s looks like my dad’s stuff, only he had more…a lot more :D (and he was only a hobby shooter)

I thought I had a lot, but I see a few more lenses there than I’ve got. Do you use it all? I find there two or three lenses I use regularly, the rest not much at all anymore.

  • Shaun Johnston replied

Hey Gracey, I haven’t really gotten around to playing with the Mamiya lenses or the Eskofot lenses (the oncovered large format lenses on the left) yet.

The Mamiyas because I only got them the other week, and the Eskofots because I don’t have a large format camera yet (they were a “spot bargain on eBay and nab quickly” affair). However, I intend to get out and about with the Mamiya soon, and failing that I have a tilt-shit adapter on its way from the Ukraine so I’ll then be able to mount them on the EOS bodies … that should be fun.

I regularly use all the Canon and Contax mount lenses though (I have a Contax to EOS adapter).

My dad had two Mamiya’s – an old pro model (the photographer who took my parents wedding photos gave my dad the camera he used along with the wedding shots) and old TL528. I couldn’t get the pro model repaired, so i got rid of it, but I’ve still got the 528 and some of it’s attachments.

I’ll be interested in seeing your shots from the Mamiya – send me a quick BM when you’ve got some. The Mamiya’s are awesome cameras.

My dad used to own that one in the middle… in brown case. I wonder who he gave it to… hmmm.

  • Shaun Johnston replied

Faizan, I picked up that Voigtlander at a camera fair for $1 :)

The lens has a little fungus and the shutter sticks randomly at anything longer than 1/60 exposure, but other than that it seems ok. I’m in the process of running a roll of film through it at the moment. Will have some scans at some point in the not-too-distant future.

would you ever think of giving them away since you’ve got so much anyway ;o)

  • Shaun Johnston replied

haha Jacqueline, I use most of it :D

A lot of it I have bought for educational purposes … I started on digital and have been working back to progressively more manual photography because I think it will give me better grounding in technique.
