Pou i te maunga
This pou is on the summit of Mount Hikurangi, the sacred mountain of the East Coast, Ngati Porou people. Also the resting place of Maui’s canoe.
Carved by the master, Derek Lardelli. The carvings were commissioned to celebrate the milenium. Mt Hikurangi is the first place to see the sun. . .

f**k!! My heart jumped when i saw this picture nestled amongst all the others … I grew up in Ruatoria (I live in melbourne now) and I have stood on top of Hikurangi twice – once when i was eleven and again when i was eighteen. I recognised that shape immediately – it would greet me every day when i walked out the door of my house. I am a pakeha, but at my mother’s funeral, when i was ten, Whaia McClutchie, a Ngatiporou elder, made my father and I honorary Ngatiporou. I have carried that gift with pride throughout my life since, and Hikurangi remains at the centre of my heart’s terrain. Thankyou and Kia Kaha.
