Mnemosyne, Goddess of Memory

Mnemosyne, Goddess of Memory

I have been an agnostic leaning towards athiest for a long long time – but the concept behind this muse is one I whole-heartedly “believe”.. We ARE our anscestors -and DNA is the magic spiral that the the ancients knew so well

Thomas this looks so much like a painting to me( I hope you take that as a compliment) Beautiful layering and the “halo” ? eye and other elements really add to the narrative.

I know what you mean agnostic leaning towards athiest, I come from a family of Cathalaholics and never fit in that trap of organized religion…...prefer my own ideas, thank you.

  • Thomas Dodd replied

I take that as a VERY high compliment indeed (especially coming as it does from such a wonderful painter!) Just look at my favorites on here and see how many of them are paintings!

Yes – I’m a “recpvering Catholic” too – although I must say – it never reallly leaves you. I know that being raised Catholic shapes my art and a lot of my thought processes too.. I still have that sense of mystery, of multiple deities (even though we called them “saints”) that represent forms and forces of the Universe, and of course a sense of dualism that I will probably never shake….

Thomas, I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who believes this. Your image is awesome and haunting. You’ve got a unique style and I’m looking forward to seeing more!

  • Thomas Dodd replied

BillyBoy – yes indeed – my parents named me well.. I doubt therfore I am!
Glad you like the image man!

  • annacuypers

    annacuypers

Ancient times, egyptian even… Lovely use of texture and layers as always !
The eye is important and strong. We are all made out of layers and carriyng the past with us. The ghosts of our history. A sort of collective and individual unconsciousness…
I’m wondering what the the circle- sign above her head means ?
I was brought up catholic too. Still young I decided not to follow dogma’s.
But Im also still influenced by it too, tha’t is for sure.
Love the warm way you bring this image and symbolic message Thomas.

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Anna – I knew you would understand exactly what I was getting at with this ! The circle above her head is a wheel which of course signifies the cycle of life, death, rebirth, etc… and the constant motion of that which we call “time”..

Another ex-Catholic eh? That explains a LOT actually! One thing I’ve noticed about a lot of ex-Catholics’ art is the mixture of fetishistic/bondage elements with either Martyr or Saintly themes…. (Just look at Madonna’s old videos for proof of that!)

    Goddesses..
    The Eternal Return..
    The Universe remembers..
    The Silence remembers..
    The Light remembers….
Re-membering… is re-joining the members of the lost identity.. scattered by the explosive force of creation…In order to get to the origin… we must.. we do…. re-join and all the objects of Life come to vision… of Tao.
    Just one problem…..
    for us… human beings..
To remember is a faculty of the brain… for survival..
and it creates Life but… anticipation..
We project..ourselves… and are anxious about what we project..
    Survival is pure stress..
    so…. re-membering… has a double edge walk….
    let… Nature do the work..
and leet us submitt into a Conscious Oblivion..
where all Universe caome to Life..
    once and again.
Rosa (Your Goddess is inteligent and misterious… though.. she feels tired…..really tired… needs a couple to let her forget… )

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Beautiful words as always my dear Rosa…. and hey – time never sleeps – so of course she’s tired!

    JenniferB

Hi, my name is Jennifer B and I’m a recovering Catholic. ;) Another powerfully, brilliant image Thomas. Would you believe, when I was four years old, I went to a State funded, Catholic school in England? Those Nuns were soooooooooooo charitable to us poor, poor kids from the Estate… My very first poem at five years of age earnt me god knows how many Hail Mary’s and a short, sharp whack on the hand from a cane… actually, I think it was the accompanying illustration that captured their attention. ;) See what the brilliance of your Artwork inspires? Yes… it’s all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :-P

  • Thomas Dodd replied

hahaha – why does that not surprise me in the least? I won’t even get into all of the reasons why I have been attracted to Catholic girls throughout my life – I suppose finding the Madonna and the Whore in one woman is every Catholic boy’s ultimate dream… Sad to say – we usually envision only one or the other in our programmed minds…

  • Mohammad Khaksar

Yes, that explains a lot about me too ! Hadn’t thougt about Madonna yet but that is indeed a famous example.
    Time is a circle indeed…
    We are soulmates. Nice feeling.

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Yes indeed my dear… and I should have known that ONLY a Catholic could have come up with this image

  • Dave Miller

    Dave Miller

excellent image, works on many levels but the real master stroke is the DNA stack in her hand showing all the ancestors. – surperb idea’s & production

  • Thomas Dodd replied

WOOHOO – thanks Dave – I was wondering when someone was going to point that out!

(and no one has found the fetus yet it seems..)

  • Thomas Dodd

that’s one of the (many, many) things I love about you my little minx….

  • Dave Miller

    Dave Miller

can’t really see the Fetus unless it’s the very top of the stack, can’t make a face out of it so it could be the fetus —might just be my Laptop poor screen, will check on my CRT PC screen next time I’m on it

  • Thomas Dodd replied

it’s at the bottom (right above her hand)
BUT – I think I’m going to post an edited version of this which will totally rearrange alot of these little components…..

nicely done. i go a bit mad trying to read the cryptic texts you pop into your work, i really would love to know what that book is….hmmm.. anyways, i love how her face is just a bit off, like motion is implied either by moving or by a time shift, so maybe that is where the steering wheel comes in, like a time machine :) the brain in the upper left is interesting. i like the shroud-type of feel as if we’re looking thru time and space. can you do bad art???!!!! lol

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Shhhh – don’t tell anyone – the water-damaged text in this one is from an old High School Yearbook (not mine!) I found on yet another fertile dumping ground!

Glad you like it my cryptic friend… and in response to your other question..if the price is right – yeah….. ;P

Your work is so emotional and moving. Not simply the images, but the entire feel of the pieces draw you in. This is one of my particular favourites of yours.
    Very sensual.
I know it sounds cliche’ but, have you ever shot in Savannah? It’s a very etheric kind of place, and I think it would meld so well with your very haunting style.
