More and more I am obsessed
with the play of light among the trees
casting shadows upon the illuminated landscape
With the textures that surround me,
with their intricacy and chaotic order
the patterns of eternity scream in silence
and I transcriibe them as they assault my senses
with their beautifully alive madness…

    Beautiful image………….great framing

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Thanks Barssel – that’s one of the few things that hasn’t changed from the origibnal photo!

Mystical, beautiful image. The colors and light are splendid, one of the best outdoor working outs I’ve ever seen. It is a difficult thing to do I think. But the natural light and shadows make it extra intersting too… Well done my friend.
    hugs,
    anna

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Thanks Anna – I am enjoying playing with light more and more and of course – enhancing it’s properties in Photoshop!

Yes ofcourse my darling I’m learning more and more myself every day with Photoshop. But it is the idea and the eye that counts ! You have an eye for beauty.

  • Thomas Dodd replied

“is the idea and the eye that counts “
That is so true. I think I was getting obsessed with technique for a while – looking at all of this complex and amazing work by other artists/photographers and wanting to emulate it in some way… but technique is never a substitute for vision or having something to say. I have to remind myself of that more and more .. I love learning new tricks and doing tutorials but all of that is just the vehicle for conveying your idea – not the idea itself.. And no one can teach you how to have a unique idea except yourself…

lovely work, love how you have worked with the play of light and great use of texture. the framing is somewhat unconventional but you make it work, beautiful image

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Thank you silveraya – I did dabble with cropping to the left of the tree trunk (which of course falls more squarely into the artistic “Rule of thrids”) but opted for including the whole scene – I think it works and I’m glad you do too!

That is so true ! The art has to become more than technics and tutorials I think. Photoshop has become more a journey to me… I learn while doing it and trying things out. I learn every time. But the eye or style, ideas and creativity comes from the soul and the eye. You certainly have an eye fotr beautiful thing Thomas. But I told you that before, lol… hugs, anna

  • Thomas Dodd replied

As much as I am intrigued by the amazing transformative power of Photoshop, I still hold true to the concept that the original photo must have some glimmer of the emotion or concept (although I have seen some surreal collage work that is very conceptual – so there goes that theory!)... You have a very direct path towards attaining your ideas since you are the subject of your work as well – I have to try and capture the emotion from a model whereas you can convey it at the moment the phoo is taken…. Your work alway stirs such strong emotions in me…

‘technique is never a substitute for vision or having something to say… I love learning new tricks and doing tutorials but all of that is just the vehicle for conveying your idea’ So true… I often use photoshop to help me work out the colour for my natural media paintings and I also experiment with different treatments. I’m sure there are some purists out there who would consider this to be cheating but, well, life is too short…

  • Thomas Dodd replied

Purists are always wrong – there is no such thing as purity in any art form – it is only through devaiation and bastardization that we progress! (Hey – that would make a good bumper stiocker!)

  • EnPassant
